Another shocking loss for thoroughbred fans... I first saw Lawyer Ron while watching simulcast of Diamond Jo Stakes from Evangeline Downs. He ran an absolutely awesome race. In his next start, I witnessed his stellar victory in Risen Star Stakes conducted at Louisiana Downs after Hurricane Katrina moved Fair Grounds meet to Bossier City that season. From quarter pole to wire, he ran powerfully. One of the best performances that I had ever seen live. He proved he was something special sweeping the Southwest-Rebel-Arkansas Derby series at Oaklawn Park.

Unfortunately, his rank behavior was his undoing in 2006 Kentucky Derby. This same trouble would surface again in both of his Breeders' Cup Classic defeats.

However, Lawyer Ron's true legacy is his magical 2007 Saratoga meet. Opening with his Whitney Handicap win and closing with his Woodward Stakes victory, he captured two of the summer's most prized Grade I races. This propelled him to Eclipse Award as outstanding older male.

Rest in peace, Lawyer Ron, rest in peace. You brought joy to us fans that followed your too brief career.

His campaign at Oaklawn was simply fantastic. Mr. Holthus had an assistant trainer on Ron at the time. Rising star Tim Glyshaw. RIP Lawyer Ron. You left us way too early.
