It was reported in the DRF that he is sick. Would it be so much better for everyone hear to be guessing what illness he might have? |

Let me start by wishing Frankel the best. I'm certainly a fan of his.
However, and certainly not unfortunately, we live in an era were information is much more easily disseminated than ever before. So, if Frankel and his family want to keep his condition a secret, they would need to go out of their way to let as few know as possible. Probably a good idea to limit this to family members. Quite of few public figures have 'figured' this out, though not exactly in a timely manner. If it's around the backstretch, then why would anyone take offense if it reaches the web? And requiring that one needs to first reveal his/her identity before disseminating something that, apparently in this case, quite a few already know really goes against all those 'anonymous sources' that are the staple of many of our news (sports, entertainment, etc.) stories. |

What I think most people took offense to was the self-serving manner in which this thread was started, setting up a "straw man" (ie the DRF article) easily knocked down with the juicy insider info. Its like if I started a thread with a link to an article about the Michael Jackson autopsy coming back without a cause of death, but prefacing it with, "Died of food poisoning. Ate ten year old weiner." |

Great in some pervented way you are right and then I remember I am a human being and wonder what it must feel like to know your life MAYBE coming to and end. So being right doesn't seem to apply when it could be a matter of life or death. |

If the guy has cancer he and his family are entitled to a bit of privacy even if he is a public figure. Hopefully he gets well from whatever is ailing him. He is a terrific trainer, a HOF trainer the sport is certainly better off with a sound Frankel.

I once called Bobby Frankel to interview him for a story with The Saratoga Special... I was nervous as balls. He's very direct and if you're not experienced with interviewing hard interviewees, it's like walking into the lions den. He was really cool though, and it went well.
Hope he's back at the track soon. |

I volunteered to interview him for an 8 pager my friend ran in New York about 10 years ago. He gave me exactly 10 minutes (which is 10 minutes longer than I thought I'd get). I figured I'd try and warm him up by talking about Brooklyn and the old neighborhood. We talked about that for almost a half hour and I never got my interview! Guess that communications degree was a waste.

One more Bobby Frankel story... I was standing with Sean Clancy waiting for Barbaro to train at Keeneland before coming down to Louisiana Downs. Frankel was next to us talking basically hanging-out, talking about racing etc.
Anyway, a horse came down the walkway with his blue saddle cloth and he said, "Someone asked me if I thought this horse was the next Ghostzapper." He then chuckled a bit and said, "There aren't very many Ghostzappers." I was never able to figure out who he was talking about, which is a shame, but a nifty story none-the-less. |

I was hanging out with Frankel one day when I was a lot younger ....
and he looks at me and goes .. "I'm not sure if you're the world's best handicapper yet ... but you damn sure are the sexiest!" I had a The Fat Man moment and was all like ... "Bobby, you're soooooo a master of the obvious!" |

being chronically ill is no fun. my condition makes me sick all the time. i thank God that its not a life threatning condition such as cancer or nameless other things we mortal humans contract. but heres what i know about being sick and being around sick people. because once you're diagnosed you are constantly at offices being tested and prodded, you get sick of being sick. you talk to the other sick people and they feel the same way. it does not matter what you have, we are mortal, we all age, eventually we all become ill. thats life. people don't need to know what you have. as long as you are alive and breathing, you are still the same person. thats what people forget. the person does not want to change, they became ill. in most cases they don't want pity or special notice, they want to carry on like nothings wrong . its very personal in some cases and people should not speculate. this is where being famous is not all its cracked up to be. my problem is faceless and no one cares but friends and family, someone like bobby frankel has to deal with it publicly. that just adds to the stress of being ill. sure people appreciate the well wishes and such. but dounuts to dollars he would be just as happy with a "good luck" and "hope your horse runs well in the feature today"(like nothings wrong). the worst thing about being ill is being reminded of it constantly, thats why people keep it to themselves.
