![]() Cheers to Sporting Life for this.
Wish they'd do this kinda thing more often. Just a little update, but still..... ![]() SPOTLIGHT ON ... NORSE DANCER By Anita Chambers, PA Sport Form figures for Norse Dancer barely do justice to a horse that accumulated nearly £730,000 in prize-money and took connections across the world. David Elsworth's charge admirably flew the flag for owner Jeff Smith, notching up a string of places in top-class events. After kicking off with a scrambled win over subsequent Group One hero Phoenix Reach on his racecourse debut, he continually ran into one or two too good on the days that really mattered. His third behind Refuse To Bend in the 2000 Guineas was an eyecatching performance at odds of 100-1, while he was overlooked by many when fourth in the Derby on his next outing. Third in the Sussex Stakes would please most, but Norse Dancer ended his three-year-old season without a win to his name. More frustration was to follow as the son of Halling came close enough to place in three Group Ones the following year. It took him until August to break his duck but he followed up just five days later with a cracking effort in the Juddmonte International at York, beaten three-quarters of a length by Sulamani. Another narrow defeat at the hands of Azamour followed and Norse Dancer ended the year still chasing that elusive Group One success. The all-important win at the highest level continued to elude Norse Dancer as connections endured a series of near-misses in 2005 and 2006. He bowed out following his lacklustre effort in the Joel Stakes in September 2006 but connections would find it hard to feel disappointment after so many good attempts on major prizes. "He was very consistent and it would have been a different story had he got his head in front and got that Group One win," said David Bowe, manager of Smith's Littleton Stud. "He was running over a couple of exceptional years against some very good horses and he came so close. "We were happy with him, though, he was so consistent and gave Jeff plenty of fun." Although Norse Dancer stood at Littleton for his first stallion season, covering sprint star Lochsong in the process, the eight-year-old has now moved to a new home in Shropshire as he seeks to establish himself in the breeding market. "Norse Dancer has gone to Bill Bromley's Wood Farm this year to stand as a dual-purpose stallion," added Bowe. "We still own him but we have leased him as we thought he would be better off up the country and around other stallions. "He covered a nice book of mares last year and he has another nice book this year and he's not finished covering yet." |
