I know it used to be that way with harness horses, not sure if it still is.

Why is that interesting? As articulated above, fillies become mares at five, not four. She's a filly until January 1.

That's how we do it in NZ and Australia. Colts become horses at 4, fillies become mares at 4. Don't know why it's different, but there you go.

Because of the difference in the respective hemisphere's breeding period(s).
