Tips/Thoughts on Breeders' Cup tickets this year?

Had one of those days at the 2000 Breeders Cup. Went from CT to ET Zone and it was the week after the time changed from daylight savings. I dragged along a friend who happened to be drinking whiskey the entire way and kept me mixed up all day.

The Saturday card will start at 1:10 p.m. Eastern with the Marathon, followed by the Turf Sprint, 1:50; Dirt Mile, 2:30; Mile, 3:15; Juvenile, 3:55; Juvenile Turf, 4:35; Sprint, 5:15; Turf, 6:00; and Classic, 6:45. Two races, the Damascus Stakes and the Oak Tree Derby, will follow the Classic.


If the idiots that produce this circus had half a brain, they would run the nine races in 3 1/2 hours. There is less than 20 minutes of actual action in 6 hours. Ever wonder why nobody other than us watches the Breeders Cup?

Seems like they could move it along a little quicker. It does provide good handicapping/drinking time in between races.

As well as driving down to the OTB to see Yakk .....did you know that it will be the last day at the Herkimer branch also, closing it's doors for good after the last race.

So when you have low level horses only running a second slower than stakes horses it is tough to give the stakes horses a big figure and then have to give the low level horses a 90+ figure. When you have a card predominantly made up of stakes horses though then it is easier to give bigger figures since the horses on the card are all capable of running 90+ speed figures.

I very well think you'll see a 105-110. Horses have been working very fast over the surface. Curlin just scampered over the surface between races in 59. Not all synthetic surfaces are equal. The Beyers do relate to the caliber of the competition but also the speed as compared to other races over the surface. If they all run like slugs, slugs they will be but I think it will be exciting. Curlin will have to overcome the likely lack of early speed in the race. I do love Curlin in the race. Been watching him since he came to NY and looks like he is rounding out to finish a storied career with a monster performance.

Well I like watching him because he is related to Jazil but that is another story. I agree with you but I do think he showed alot for a horse with very little experience to make a run like that in the Peter Pan. Showed alot of maturity. Do I think he has a chance in the classic? Too much would have to fall his way. The game is interesting in that how many times have we said that and the race falls their way. I have no doubt the horse will be fit. But I agree with you, his connnections were great. Very respectful even in the face of a Dutrow onslaught as I recall. And very strange training methods. They work very slow but they walk their horses forever both before and after works. How much lactic acid can a horse accumulate! I kept seeing them walking Casino Drive around Zito's barn for a couple of hours. He will add some interest. But I really don't think their will be anyone catching Curlin. And he should go out as the monster he is.

It's silly to compare the two. Casino is a grade 2 winner...and regardless of the competition, he actually was able to beat those 3 year olds...while Tomcito raced in a couple of those races and was never able to win.

Anyway, what 3 year old race was a "key race." They all sucked. This is the weakest Classic field ever, and CD is a grade 2 winner with a beyer top of 99. It should only take about a 105-110 to win this. If he stays the same, he'll finish mid pack. If he improves, he'll be right there.

do you take into consideration the uh..ahem, depth of the field he was facing that day? or perhaps i should say lack of depth.

Well, if tickets are cheap, no excuse for thoroughbred enthusiasts not to try to get to Santa Anita.

It's our All Star Game.

Some years better, and some years not. But, it's only played once a year and ends up in an easily researched and perhaps remembered spot.

I've attended the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness, and The Belmont. And Saratoga and Del Mar.

And Thistledown. :-)


I'm psyched to make my first Breeders Cup.

My program and tickets will definitely end up preserved somewhere around here.


Plus, I understand they do sell beer at Santa Anita.
