Sounds like your handling your situation just fine, by the way, I just got a new Jack Russell Terrier puppy, replacing my dear old friend who unexpectedly passed away, I love these dogs, they are truly the clowns of the dog world. He makes me smile constantly!
She is the first JRT that I have owned...and the best thing ever...love her like there is no tomorrow.
