Dude, Good Reward was 1 win in 7 dirt starts prior to this race with no 2nds or 3rds either. Are we really supposed to jump up and down because he beat Good Reward in the slowest running ever on a track that has been playing very fast? The emperors new clothes come off if he ever comes East. BUt I doubt that will happen, some excuse will come up.

Yeah, wait till Lava Man runs into a real Grade 1 horse like Flower Alley, that horse will show him what heart is about!

and in lava mans defense, the track has been playing slow. i'm sure they've been tinkering with it due to the breakdowns, made it deeper....

but the drift a top horse? no. 2nd tier, makes money, but he's not the cream...

Perfect Drift didnt run his race. Gee i wonder what happened to Lava Man at Belmont when he went over. You people gotta put this in perspective with Lava Man and his "Grade 1" wins

i really wish you naysayers would quit peeing in lava mans wheaties. what the hell more does this guy have to do? like it's HIS fault his trainer/owner are west coast people. he hasn't taken a step wrong all year. why hold against him what MAY happen when he comes east! why can't you just give him a bit of a hand for winning all year? against anyone who showed? and he just accomplished in one year what it took best pal to do in three, something that's never been done....but oh, no! we have to hear speculation about what will happen when he comes east. gimme a break.

here's to the BEST horse in the west. i'll hold off judgement on his east coast ability when he actually comes over here in a few months, and shows if he can or not. til then, who knows?! um, no one does.

I'm a fan of increasing the purses of the big races to entice the owners to leave some of the real champions in the game a little longer. It's hard to get excited over a claimer and a South American champ dominating the older division.

so a horse that's run for a tag can never be considered good? can never move up, never improve?

and what about paseana, bayakoa? they aren't as good because they were imports?

i think your logic is flawed.

LAVA MAN, lets see that is 4 grade 1 wins and 4 million dollar races. Looks pretty good on paper and in the bank.

and there isn't enough increasing out there...smarty was syndicated for 35 million (for example) what race purse could ever compete with that? none, anywhere. spectacular bid ran and won every race at four, actually a losing proposition for his owners, as the purse money won didn't come close to paying for his insurance premiums for that year.

i can't believe you're saying lava man isn't a real champ. that's crazy. he beat grade one winners today.

What's kind of hard to digest, is whether we recognize it or not, our most veratile horses are usually intact and so subconciously we have them on a ticking clock. He IS a gelding so hopefully he stays sound and we get to see him do all kinds of different things. But it is, I imagine, good to pick a line of thought (with small variations, which they have done) and aim. This year it's the classic. Maybe next year they will concentrate on turf. Stay healthy, Big Boy!

Very true ...

... this is a below-average year for older horse ... but there have been many worse.

So far ... I give them a 3 on a scale of 10.

Lava Man is a throwback to the days when horses were professional athletes ...

... who knew their business ... showed up for all the big races ... and did their jobs.

Anyone who doesn't have the highest respect for this horse ... is someone who doesn't know squat about the meaning of horse racing.

My only regret is that Surf Cat was hurt. Would have been a joy to watch him stop and offer Lava Man some milk and cookies as he was flying by Lava Man heading for home

Lava Man wont win the BC Classic as he has not won outside So Cal.
Do you know how hard it is to transport Doug Oneil's chemistry set?
