It still took just as much to ride her perfectly. But when you have the best horse like that, you don't need to ride the horse perfectly to win. In other words, even if he would have dropped back too far or even if he would have been too close the pace, he would have probably still won. So the horse would have won even if he didn't give a great ride, but it turns out he did give a great ride.

The really smart thing that he did was when they passed the stands the first time. He let the horse outside of him have the lead and then he quickly got off the rail and went outside of her. That was the proper thing to do.
