If you have a daughter you want to go to college on a free ride??? Start her in golf...Major colleges and universities are begging to give away scholarships to young ladies that are even marginally talented.

true that.. I was getting scholarship offers my junior year. My best friend, who never beat me when we played in high school (I was very competitive when I played daily), got a ride to Mt St Mary's and was there #1 golfer some years.

For me at the time, having to practice golf 4+ hours a day in college would have been torture.

What a tremdous few days it has been!!!!!

Michael Phelps what can anyone even say...
the relay WOW!!!
Coughlin being the first woman to defend the backstroke gold!!!!

I haven't kept up to the swimming thread....
but some interesting theories here...

I think the chinese did indeed soup up the water creating a pool bias for the americans and the rest of the world to smash records....

Oh and trusty forget coughlin and the french girl....I'll take that russian from last nite, the rogue who swims with his hair exposed!!!!!

So the overagressive, overbearing parent syndrome has invaded juvenile swimming now too. Makes sense, first it was just football- then baseball, basketball, and hockey joined in, now it's all those plus golf, skiing, swimming, running, parasailing, chess, whatever. Pretty pathetic in my opinion. I think a lot of these guys try to make up for their own inadequacy in sport by pushing their children too hard. With Title IX, it's even harder for a male to get an athletic scholarship and shouldn't be the dependent path to college. Doing well in class is still the best route, no matter what high school you attend.

I agree with GPK though... a girl with a strong 5 handicap is very much in line for a scholarship.

Partial academic/athletic has been the trend. Auburn is notorious for this.

A girl with a strong 17 handicap will get a golf scholarship.. I girl with a 5 handicap will be going to the University of Arizona on a golf scholarship.

I didn't watch prelims today and there isn't video OR heat sheets posted on NBC's goddamn-ridiculously s.hitty Olympic website. The webmaster should be sent to die by firing squad.

White girls:
Soccer is also good for girls. But count on getting hurt.
Volleyball is decent, but plan on paying huge bucks for Club ball, and plan on spending enormous amounts of time on it in College; very rigorous training, although not as bad as swimming.
Basketball... forget it. A girl I taught in 1987 got a full ride to UT the year after they won the National championship. I dont think she would get a Division I offer in today's world.

Women's hockey gives on average the largest amount of scholarship money at
$20,500 for women. So dads, move to the great white North and get your girl on the ice. But dont count on the SEC to pay your way.

On topic. Phelps looked slightly human in the Butterfly. He actually looked winded.
