Oh, I'm so glad you said something-- I have those mental race calls going on in my head while I'm weaving through crowds, trying to be the first person out of the subway station... I'm so glad it's not just me!

When I see a good looking women, I usually call them "useful", Not too many people really understand it, except racing folk, You can basically tell your friend out loud that a girl beside you is good looking..

Being that I live 10 minutes from Scioto Downs and 15 minutes from Beulah Park all the time I am seeing Horse Trailers going up and down the road. The road that I live directly off of is a commonly used route for Horsemen to take their Horses to the barns behind Scioto Downs, so from May until September, every day, you can see a Trailer being pulled with a buggy on top. Especially between the hours of Noon till around 3pm. Now, also consider that when I look out my spare bedroom window, I see in the distance a Horse Farm. Wanna talk about the place to be if you love horses, Columbus is the home of the Quarter Horse Congress, which draws half a million people over the course of its month long stay at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. A wonderful time to be had if you have not been to it.
I am all the time thinking of what would make a cool Horse name. Hey, look at the name of that road. The name on that liscense plate. Boy it would be nice to be at the track, etc etc.. I usually try to stay away from racing thoughts while I am behind the wheel seeing how I have a "perfect" driving record I can't afford any more points on my record

I'm guilty of most of the above offenses. My worst was asking for a mint julep at Starbucks one morning a few days before the Derby.

i make horse racing references fairly often, esp when i talk about an employee as being a sprinter, not a stayer! my office wall has pics of racehorses, and more to come. gotta get 'risk' framed.

or if we walk around the track, it's 2 furlongs a lap. what can i say?

i also will constantly say "so and so" that's a horse name! if it's not a horse name than it's hey, that would make a good horse name....

or someone will want to set up a date to do something...nope, that's _________race day. gotta be home at four. tony knows to always set the DVR at certain times of the year.

bc is the first wknd in november, thank goodness modern gun season doesn't start til the second saturday....

and next year, the day after thanksgiving is lsu vs ark, but i'll be making a wknd of it in LA--head to the racetrack that saturday.

and every horse, i try to figure pedigree from their names...have gotten pretty good at that!!

I caught myself as soon as I said it. I don't think she had any idea where I was coming from, but when I fessed up to my friends, they all understood exactly where my mind was.

Thinking of some other stuff. For two months last year, my friends and I referred to everything and everyone that we deemed "average" as a Giacomo.

I often discuss with my single friends whether they are dating in allowance company, or just chasing cheap claimers.

Anyone who starts a party by drinking heavily early is sprinting, or setting a suicidal pace, with the prediction they will fade when the real running begins.

I do that myself aswell but most of my friends are not horse racing people whatsoever so it usually passes them by or they think Im quite odd!.. theres one guy I know, he sets ridiculous early fractions but still has enough gas to last the distance. Simply incredible!

Guilty of being a car jockey although I have a better record than Jerry Baily. I usually pick out an overhead sign on the freeway and if I win easy I let off the gas a little to give others a chance to the next sign. What's fun is when the car(s) around you realize it and start to race.

Do it all the time.....with my record to bad I can't breed my car.

When going through crowds you have to watch for others bearing out or bearing in, causing you to check or clip heels

Back to the original post.

I use to run in road races competitively. I would always think at the beginning of a race when I started out excited but conservative that I was being constrained by my jockey and that the some of the novices that took out like bats out of hell were first timers. They of course would come back to me usually by the end of a half a mile...

My track workouts would clearly involve breezing or hand ridden.

And at the end of a race when it was flat out a struggle to keep pace I would just concentrate on holding form and fighting thru the fatigue. And down the stretch they come...

Gander and some others might know what I am talking about. I think running on your own gives you a great appreciation how athletic horses are.
