Papal Bull set to face German Derby winner in Cologne

Papal Bull (red cap): looked a reformed character at Ascot and could go one better

Keith Hamer

PAPAL BULL bids to show his fine run in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes was no fluke when he lines up for the Rheinland-Pokal der Sparkasse at Cologne onSunday.

The five-year-old, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, put up a career-best performance when running the brilliant Duke Of Marmalade to half a length at Ascot three weeks ago.

He now aims to gain his first win at the highest level in this GermanGroup 1 over 1m4f.

"Ryan Moore has been booked to ride and Michael reports him to be well and good. All we can do is hope for the best," said David Stack for owners the Papal Bull syndicate.
The son of Montjeu faces five rivals, headed by German Derby winner Kamsin.

"We're giving a lot of weight to this year's German Derby winner," Stack went on.

"In the ratings they rate us 126, him 116 and that would be giving 10lb. But if he runs like he did at Ascot and proves that he's rated 132 then he would show his Timeform rating wasn't a fluke.

"He is a very talented horse and it's all credit to Michael."
