I lived within a mile radius of my junior and senior high school so I walked for 7 years...not sure of the distance as I cut through the woods, but about a half mile....always fun in VT winter.

k-2nd was about a mile walk. Not far, but we had to take old stairs that went for about 50' through a wooded area, cross railroad tracks and the main street of the town.
My guess, our my parents never thought twice about letting little kids venture on their own. No way it would happen nowadays. them we moved to the 'burbs and those awful bus rides.
