With the market crazy about first crop sires, especially those from the Unbridled sire line, to my way of thinking, it is not a good sign that Saarland's average yearling last year only sold for about $40,000 and that he only had three sell for a figure in excess of $100,000. Obviously, time will tell.
His book was beyond ordinary...

The quality of his book is a reflection of what the breeders think of him as a stallion prospect, especially in his first crop. I guess then that we should expect "ordinary."

I expect Saarland to be a great stallion.. He was a very ordinary grade 2 plodder. His pedigree is wonderful and he was a very pleasing horse to look at.. Of course his first book sucked who wants to try and resell a plodder in the age of fast and fizzle..

If the quality of his first book was as poor as you suggest, then it would be a big surprise if he produces much this year. And if that happens, then it's a virtual certainty that the number of mares he will see and the quality of those mares that he does get will continue to decline as breeders opt for the next "flavor of the month." The facts that you are presenting only serve to suggest that he'll be a regional stallion in three years.

I don't think anyone was suggesting that he will be the next AP Indy. What does Saarland stand for? I would guess about $10,000. He might be alright as a $10,000 stallion.

According to the Stallion Register, Saarland's fee is private, and he stands an Darby Dan Farm in Lexington KY.

If I recall my conversations with the people at Darby Dan this spring, I think you could have visited him this year for about $6,000 (which is half the $12,500 for which he stood in his first year).
