any addict needs to replace the former addiction with something else, albeit an alcoholic becomes addicted to going to meetings, a compulsive gambler takes up gardening.
It is EXTREMLY IMPORTANT for Jerry to find something TO REPLACE GAMBLING WITH. Otherwise, he will fall back. When you give something up, you leave a hole that needs to be filled.
