Dickey Betts was once said to have slaughtered a live cow in a field due to near starvation.

I guess later in life his wife refused to cook for him.

Really.

Here's a pretty poim by Lord George Gordon.

She walks in beauty

(He begins)

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

If I may...

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

--Rudyard Kipling

I hope this is Snowy Woods worthy.

If not, I'll just stick my pud in my zipper.

Did he really?

Ya know...even though his game coaching skills were diminishing....you have shown me there was much more to him than I thought.

The administration should be shot for hiring that fool in his place.

Fucl<in aye. He had his faults, particularly on the field in his last few years, but I have a lot of respect for him.

Well his team certainly seems to have thought very well of him since he left. That's when you really find out--when you're not around anymore.

OK..here's the latest gem from the International Sage...The FROZEN ONE:

Speaking on tonights home game in which Cleveland trails 3:2 of a 7 game series..and where neither team has bagged a road win.

' A series never starts until one team wins a road game.'

Gosh I hate to say this Lee.....but if you lose tonight the series

is ovah!!!

That was a fine call on "Will the Circle be Unbroken" in the FieldGoalFan thread.

I had not heard that in quite some time.

Thank you so much....it's an all timer for me.

You know---it has to be done right.

It's like hearing Jessica Simpson do Oh Holy Night.

Magnificent song....but with her----it just don't work.
