Yes, its worth complaining about. You dont get viewers by trying to tie in monday night football graphics. You advertise horse racing. I can't imagine a good deal of casual sports fans were sitting there going damn, its like monday night football, let me watch this....I'm glad that espn is trying new things, but this was not a winner. If you want to attract fans, put up a fantasy contest that viewers can win money on. Lets say a diffrent bet every week with a pool of 3,000 dollars. When you show the preps have someone detail the bet for that race or races.

As an example lets use the florida derby. At the start of the telecast, detail a certain type of bet,lets use the superfecta, and have an announcer break that wager down. You dont have to make it difficult just an explanation of several ways to play the wager. Then, give them a mythical 24,48,60 dollars to use to create a wager. Everyone that hits the wager will split the pot of 3,000, if no hits, it carrys over to the next week or telecast. People love free contests and this gets them involved into not only horse racing but an intro into handicapping.
