Hard Spun got a 101 Beyer in the Spiral last year - and he won it by daylight. Dominican got a 93 for running down Street Sense in the Blue Grass...and that figure was corrected significantly because of the extreme slow pace, and would have been in the 80's if not. The problem is, unlike last year when horses like Street Sense and Hard Spun had excellent credentials on dirt going into the Derby - the horses who are winning these synthetic track route races with the dumbed down figures have either never run over dirt or haven't been effective on it. The more troubling thing to me is how slow the dirt preps have been. |

There were 6 routes run on the Blue Grass card (apparently they put a little thought into having other routes on a "big race" care...take note, NYRA). The following is what Beyer did with the raw figure to get the Beyer. 1: Subtract 5 3: 0 4: Subtract 5 6: Subtract 5 9: 0 10: Add 5 It was an shaky day. The first four were run at 8.5f, the last two at 9f. So, it was clearly subjective. He could have gone 5 points in either direction to be honest. He could have used -5, 0, or +5, all logically. I went with a 97 speed figure looking back on my notes, and given the future performance of the horses it stood up well. The point is, making figures is no exact science and never will be. Some are easy, some are hard, and you do your best. |

![]() OK, how about the Lane's End last year at Turfway Park ? That's the race both Adriano and Hard Spun won.

Synthetic track figures are meaningless to me - but I've always wondered how the sheet makers, who don't account for pace, can get away with not splitting sprint and route variants when they make them. I'm sure they can't in extreme case I guess. The day that Domincan ran down Street Sense in the Blue Grass the final time was 1:51.33 - thirty minutes earlier Silent Name won a 7 furlong race in 1:21.26 - basically a quarter mile in a little over 30 seconds time seperates those two races. |

Just like dirt, sometimes you have to split routes and sprints, and sometimes you don't. However, you MUST use new parallel time charts for these tracks if you want to do that. If you stick to the same ones, it will never work. |

ID is making the same points that I tried to make in the BSF thread the other day, but it was called a "new low" since I'm the one that brought it up. Thank you ID for bringing these points up again. Maybe you presented the same questions/concerns in a different, more logical manner than me, but I'm glad that someone else brought them up and recognizes them. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks certain BSFs are meaningless (I'm not saying that Beyers are meaningless overall. BSFs are very useful sometimes...). At least some of my questions were answered. Last edited by kentuckyrosesinmay : 03-24-2008 at 04:01 PM. |
