Miss Finland.....

www.theage.com.au

Miss Finland retired

Glamour mare Miss Finland has run her last race with leading trainer David Hayes and managing part-owner John Messara announcing her retirement after she finished fifth to Sirmione in the Australian Cup.

Hayes said that jockey Craig Williams pleaded with him not to retire the five-time Group One winning mare who was trapped wide before surging forward to hit the front on the turn before weakening.

"The real Fin (Miss Finland) would have probably sprinted with Sirmione and got beaten half a length because she had a bad run," Hayes said.

"She had no luck, but she's not racing like she was, the winner made her look second rate.

"She's the best two and three-year-old I've ever trained by a long way. She's given me the best ride.

"She's re-established me, so I owe her everything," Hayes added about his return to Australia after 10 years training in Hong Kong.

"John told me he was going to give me the best-two-year-old in Australia and I laughed at him, but she was.

"She's been a highly-competitive four-year-old but not a champion. When she runs fourth in a Cox Plate, second in an Underwood and a Caulfield Stakes everyone is up in arms and a lot of horses can't even get into those races.

"We feel that she's better than that and she's not quite what she was so we'll retire her."

Messara said Miss Finland would be mated with his Arrowfield Stud stallion Hussonet, the sire of star three-year-old and the Newmarket Handicap winner Weekend Hussler, this spring.

Miss Finland's wins included the 2006 Golden Slipper, Thousand Guineas, VRC Oaks and the 2007 Australian Guineas and Arrowfield Stud Stakes.

She is the only filly to win the Golden Slipper-VRC Oaks double.

Bentley Biscuit.....

http://www.racingandsports.com.au/ra...asp?NID=123333

Paratroopers' career up in the air
Sunday, 23 March 2008:

Sydney racing has lost one of its favourite gallopers with the retirement of Bentley Biscuit and now the career of another Group One winner in Paratroopers is also at the crossroads.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse confirmed Bentley Biscuit would not race again after suffering a massive bleeding attack during Saturday's The Galaxy at Randwick.

The six-year-old failed to finish the race and was walked back to the mounting enclosure by Nash Rawiller whose riding silks and pants were stained with blood spots.

"It's tragic he broke down, I loved the horse and I was a bit upset by it," Rawiller said.

"He was a stable favourite."

A three-time Group One winner, the flashy chestnut with the white blaze retired as the winner of 12 of his 23 starts and almost $1.5 million in prizemoney.

His final major in Sydney was his All-Aged Stakes victory 12 months ago, the same race that gave Paratroopers his breakthrough Group One win a year earlier.

The Peter Snowden-trained five-year-old appeared to have broken down when a long last in the Apollo Stakes earlier this month but veterinarians could find nothing seriously amiss so Snowden sent him to the paddock for a freshen-up.

The Expressway Stakes winner had only recently returned from a throat operation and while he is now back in work at Warwick Farm and tentatively being aimed towards a start in next month's TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick, Snowden says he won't take any risks with him.

"I'll give him a good trial and if he doesn't fire then he won't race ever again," Snowden said.

"He's in the TJ Smith on the 26th of April. He came back into work last week and he was snorting his tail off.

"He loves being in work and he loves his racing."

The Group One TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) is at Randwick on April 26.
