To be fair the Twins offered Santana a reported 80 million for 4 year extention and he turned it down. But you make a valid point about smaller market teams not being able to afford to keep high end talent.

Once he turned down the offer the Twins had no choice but to trade him. Santana also had a no trade clause in his contract and the Mets were one of the teams he agreed to. As a Mets fan I'm thrilled they were able to acquire the ace they needed.
