Laser Power retired... he was the one who got injured on the way from Happy Valley to Sha Tin last month.
Of course "retired" can mean one of two things but I'll just hope it means the better option. * * * Race 10 - THE CHINESE CLUB CHALLENGE CUP (HANDICAP) Tuesday, January 01, 2008, Sha Tin, 17:10 Turf ,"A" Course ,1400m Prize Money: $2,300,000.00, Rating: 95+, Race Class: HONG KONG GROUP 3 Horse No. Colour Horse Wt. Trackwork notes, SCMP.....
RACE TEN, RATED 95+ (G3), 1,400 METRES Floral Pegasus zoomed home over the top of Royal Prince in their final workout on Saturday. Joyful Winner looks in good shape and went very nicely under Gerald Mosse in his major gallop this week. Able One has been an improver and there was plenty to like about the way he hit the line at the end of a gallop under Shane Dye on Saturday. River Jordan has also been impressive in his work, with Darren Beadman riding him in each of his recent workouts. Danacourt's work has pleased, while Pocket Money has recovered from a setback and worked strongly following a quiet AWT trial. |

FLORAL PEGASUS began awkwardly, causing Apprentice K L Chui, its rider, to become unbalanced. SUNNY POWER was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, JOYFUL WINNER was crowded for room between ABLE ONE and POCKET MONEY. In the early stages, MY CHOICE, AMBITIOUS GENERAL and ABLE ONE were taken across behind runners. Also in the early stages when racing without cover, POCKET MONEY proved difficult to settle. On straightening, VIVA MACAU was carried wider by FLORAL PEGASUS which shifted out into clear running. B Prebble (ROYAL PRINCE) said in his opinion the horse poor performance was attributable to the drop back in distance and the fact that it got left flat-footed when the tempo of the race quickened making the Home Turn. ROYAL PRINCE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of ROYAL PRINCE after the race did not show any significant findings. SUNNY POWER, POCKET MONEY and DOWN TOWN were sent for sampling. |

Sunday, January 06, 2008 Aitken and Bell in scintillating form SHIHAM RAMIZ Followers of leading South China Morning Post's Racing tipsters Alan Aitken and John Bell went home with two of the big exotics at the New Year's Day meeting, with Aitken landing the 183-1 treble with his top selections and Bell the third double trio at odds of more than 3,900-1. It was a mighty finish to the first meeting of 2008 for Aitken, our chief racing writer and Bell, our resident form analyst-journalist. Between the pair they correctly found seven winners as top selections. Aitken, aka Hats, tipped the $1,277.50 quinella in race seven as well as the $1,844 treble, while Bell found the three placegetters from his four selections in both races nine and 10 (the two legs of the third DT). The feature race, the Chinese Club Challenge Cup (Pocket Money 1, Down Town 2, Floral Pegasus 3) was the primary source of the big dividends, with Bell's second selection Down Town injecting the value into all multiples. The race 10 Quinella paid $1,681, the Trio $2,441 while the third double trio paid $39,034 for a $10 investment. Aitken's front page tipping features have been almost gild-edged this season and so it proved once again, with Pocket Money bravely seeing off the high-class field, despite an unfortunate wide trip. The John Size-trained Pocket Money paid a win dividend of $83.50. The in-form tipster landed six winners on December 23 meeting at Sha Tin and another three on December 26 . His other winners at this meeting were My Home Town ($22.50, second best bet), Craig's Dragon ($35, best bet) and Congratulation ($71). That result took him to the top of the Straight Bets poll, both by number of winners and profitability. Bell's winners also included My Home Town and Craig's Dragon, as well as his best bet of the day Never Look Back ($35). Aitken and Bell are dominating the tips panel this term, almost across the board. Craig's Dragon was Aitken's 17th winning best bet (Nap) of the term, at a profit of $216.50 (surveyed on $10 win only investments). His four winners for the day took him to 76 with a profit of $119.00. John Bell's big afternoon cemented his place in the quinella standings, adding four more for the programme to take his season's tally to 80, with followers who have been level staking his quinellas at $10 each ($60 per race) now showing a profit of $1,419 after 31 meetings. Bell is also looming dangerously on the Trio poll, where he currently sits second to statistics editor Vincent Wong (Shannon). The best team of experts in racing are yours, for every Wednesday night and weekend race meeting, in the big liftout guide of the South China Morning Post, or online at www.racing.scmp.com. |

Let's play Hong Kong!
(For fun) R1... I don't care how good Perfect Athlete looks, how can you pass up a name like Pleasure Pleasure? His only win this season was with Dye up... maybe he likes him. Hell, Bulldozer only behaved for two jockeys..... R1, PP / Gen Speed R2..... Bold Champion, winner - prettiest tail award for the night , with Brettie up.Workout partner to Bite My Dust.... I think they're both improving. Spirit of Lo Pan is probably the favorite here..... R3.....God I love this field, especially the old guys. Natural Blitz and Scintillation might not be as good as they once were but Scintillation has a shot. Planet Ruler is an icon. Doesn't win much these days but whatever. Country Music has been hurt soooo many times now it's just sad. One guess who trains him. I think Gallant is right with her Gains theory and this one is improving. Fifty Fifty has been having a really nice season. Don't think as much of him as the gentlemen (he's pretty though, nice dark boy ) BUT I think it might be one of those (kinda sad) changing of the guard races and besides, he DOES like coming in 2nd.My heart is not in this but Friendly Gains / Fifty Fifty. R4.....As You Wish beat the crap outta him in the past but Couldn't Care Less who lives up to his name on occassion is my boy. NO objectivity... good luck to him. R5.....Prideoftheorient, who was workout partner to Green in Blue (rest in peace, good boy). He should be at decent odds. R6..... All the Wong boys are crazy. Tossup between Floral Nirvana and Industrial Success with Courageousheart right behind. R8..... Even though Leung is up, Reunion. R8... Come home safe, First Knight. It's his 93rd start. No pick. R9... All the buzz is about Mariachi but I'll stick with First Baby, who had a nice season last year, and Eight Plus Nine, who i think is underated. R10..... Nice, nice field with Supreme gains a standby starter. Sentimental here...... He Can Tango and Kindacross UNLESS Supreme gains goes in..... he'd win. Come home safe boys. Barrier trials (Helene Brilliant 2nd in batch 1..... yea!) http://www.hkjc.com/english/press/btrs.asp Last edited by my miss storm cat : 01-05-2008 at 10:42 PM. |

* * * Feel better, Leader. Gelded..... Bejeweled (Dejeweled?) We passed the vets exam..... Master Power Tiger Prawn, and... Regency Horse! Take THAT, Tony Cruz..... HKJC not only arranged a race for Super Kid but a new one this year... in honor of Russian Pearl. Beautiful little boy ("the engine of a Lamborghini in the body of a mini-Cooper"... one of Tony's better lines). Russian Pearl for those who don't know was Bullish Luck's stable mate, travel companion, workout partner and friend. Won the Stewards' Cup (beat a fantastic field)... http://www.hkjc.com/english/racing/r...2006&raceno=08 ... and other races including the HSBC premiere Cup two years in a row and a great 2nd to Vengeance of Rain in the HK Derby. 4th in the Champions Mile, 4th in the HK Cup (VOR, Pride, Maraahel)... he ended his career with a 119 rating... near the top of the top 50 which he was always in (if not the top 10 or 15). Went to Dubai with BL where he placed a disappointing 9th, raced in NZ before HK. http://www.hkjc.com/english/pp_formsheet/fse_E019.pdf This poor horse suffered injury after injury but Cruz ran him into the ground. (Fight if you want, No Chance. He DID). Anyway, nice to see a race named for him. |

I know this is late but As a loyal Hong Kong racing fan, congrats to Viva Pataca for making HK proud in his race in Dubai. The winner was probably not going to be caught anyway but I thought Beadman could have rode him a little better to atleast give him a better chance of catching that filly. Nevertheless Viva Pataca made Hong Kong proud, and once again shows that their horses should be respected wherever they race.

Excerpt, SCMP... Viva Pataca's owner, Stanley Ho Hung-sun, seemed disappointed with finishing second, but jockey Darren Beadman told him to be proud of Hong Kong's representative in his first foray on foreign soil. "Dr Ho, that was a tremendous run, he's done you proud," Beadman said. "I really have no excuses. He crossed nicely from the wide barrier, there was a lot of speed on and he had cover all the way. "We moved into the race nicely, always having cover and when I produced him to the outside he quickened up beautifully." Beadman said that as the field charged to the championship furlong, the final 200 metres, he thought Viva Pataca would emulate Vengeance Of Rain, who lifted the Sheema Classic last year off a much slower tempo. "He came to win the race but just peaked on his run," Beadman said. "The filly had a much easier run and she's drawn away from us in the final stages. I think she must be a pretty good filly, by the same token," the jockey added. Trainer John Moore was pleased his four-time Group One winner had performed creditably, but admitted feeling a little empty after beating all but the Mike de Kock-trained four-year-old. "You know me, I don't like running second, you don't come all this way with the goal of running second - I want to win," Moore said. "But realistically, he's run a great race and reflected great credit on himself, on everyone associated with him, and on Hong Kong racing. "In the end, the winner has received two kilos from us and had a much better barrier. The weight and the barrier has probably made the difference," the trainer added. Cheers to the Fab Four from HK. ![]() |
