It is not a bad deal for Philly at a fairly reasonable price. He actually is taking a bit of a pay cut if he doesnt get the 3rd year option picked up. He will presumably play RF in a semi platoon with J. Werth who hits lefties very well but cant hit righties which complements well with Jenkins. Jenkins is a pretty good outfielder for a team with a statue in left field. It is possible that he will be a late innings defensive replacement for Burrell on days he doesn't start. Plus he gives the Phils a strong left handed bat coming off the bench on days when Werth starts in right, which is something they were sorely lacking. They needed to add some pop with Victorino replacing Rowand full time in center and Jenkins going from a good hitters park to a very good hitters park should be fine if he is healthy. If he can give them .275 25 85 / .340 .450 with good defense which is pretty close to his norms he will be a good signing. $6.5 million for a 20 HR, 85 RBI guy with a good glove is a good deal. If he is a 14 HR 65 RBI guy it's not. I guess we will see.

Of course the Phils holes at 3b, Catcher, and the back end of the rotaion are still there.

They also signed C. Durbin to go along with JD Durbin, meaning they now have a monopoly on the pitching Durbins, which is not a positive sign.

Chuck can sell almost anything.I wonder how much you could sell the filly who won the 8th at Calder today for? That's a $3k(at auction) 2 year old filly with a 5 % jock up,and she exploded on them girls like a grenade. The Kip Deville people won't be able to resist......Then,after that,I got a singer inbred both sides of the tree with fighter blood.Just a bit cantankerous....that's a much tougher sell.

2 observations-

G. Jenkins, regardless of his overall from season to season, has spurts EVERY YEAR, where the guy just catches fire. Me and my friends call him the biggest "leightening-in-a-bottle" player in the league. He has usually a couple of 1-2 week spurts of just insanely good hitting numbers on a yearly basis.

But! He also gets hurt... every year. Just when you think he's realy startin to get his season goin, he'll get some injury that will put him on the DL. I gotta assume he's landed on the DL every year of his career (no joke). So you take the good with the bad for him. He's starting to get a little older, but he is a professional hitter. He';d be definately someone my beloved Twinkies could use...

One other note- It's tough to compare him to Rowand. At least defensively it is. Jenkins hasn't ever played CF for any team. They should've kept Rowand, but as far as saying Jenkins is Rowand's replacement, that's not right... Remember this, Rowand has had his health issues too (but he's also one of the hardest players in the league).
