What is the BC Cancels the card

What happens is the card is cancelled on BC day. I saw where there might be thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening on Saturday. Would they run the races on Sunday or what?

Why is it called a starting gate when its the only place on the track where all the horses stop?

When the gates open they all leave and it should therefore be a "leaving gate"

And how come horses don't ever finish at the finish line, those darn things keep going sometimes back around to the leaving gate.
