I was lucky enough to grow up in an area where horseracing was popular and during a time when I was able to see and appreciate horses like Seattle Slew, Affirmed, The Bid and John Henry. I wrongly assumed that horses like this would come along quite often. Though I understood that these horses were great at the time, it's not until times like this when you really gain a new perspective and then feel sad not just that old John has passed but that another one like him isn't coming.

My first couple of experiences (that stand out) were the first few Millions at Arlington and after seeing the Bid/John Henry and watching Secretariat, Seattle Slew, etc on TV, then seeing the likes of Cigar and Unbridled run at the 'new' Arlington it doesn't compare and I realize we were spoiled during that era. But then again my Grandpa would talk about War Admiral, Whirlaway and Citation. Aren't we due?????? Hope so.
