Never. But I am a huge student of the history of the game. I have read enough about the game to feel very confident in making the statement about Hogan and Snead. I was also incredibly fortunate that one of golf's greatest gentleman, Chandler Harper, befriended me in the last few years of his life. He would come to the golf course in Suffolk where I was the Head Pro. I would have lunch with him a few times a month where I would sit like a kid..listening to all his old stories from when he played with those guys. I learned more from Mr. Harper in the last couple years he was alive than anyone or any book could ever teach me. So again, I feel confident in making the statement I did.

kev - tiger played great and is no question the best out there and maybe one day will go down as the greatest , but , to as far as shotmaking goes Johnnie Miller and Lee Trevino have to be up there , who knows how many more tourney's miller would hav won if he could have putted and Trevino as a shotmaker from the 7 iron down is as good or better than Tiger - Tiger is probably 50 yds longer off the tee, but , no one could touch the merry mex with a wedge

Lee was a GREAT ballstriker..top 5 of all time.

Johnny Miller?? Come on Marty...the guy had 3 or 4 good years. He didnt sustain his "greatness" long enough for me.

kev it was the putting and the family - he didn't really push his talent to the top - but those years in the mid 70's he had were unreal - that 63 at Oakmont could be the best round ever played in an open - if he had Nicklaus putt for him who know how many he would have won , but , putting is a big part of the game
As for Lee trevino - he was quoted as saying if Jack Nickluas had to play my tee shots he would still be a pharmicst back in ohio!!! man - i got to see him play in some senior events up at sleepl hollow and meadowbrook up here kev - he would talk to wedge and tell it what exactly to do

I agree with you about Lee....the guy was unreal...especially with the way that he would reroute his swing. He is surely top 5 ballstrikers of all time....and he could putt lights out.


Johnny....blah....they dont have tournaments where only the shots from tee to green count. He was hot for a few years in the mid 70's...but I can think of plenty of better ballstrikers before and after him.

You've heard the story, I'm sure, about Hogan... He asked his caddy for yardage, the caddy said about 125, 126.. Hogan sternly replied, "Well, Which is it!! Precision!!
Johnny Miller will tell you that Johnny Miller was the greatest ball striker, albeit for a short period of time.

Where would you put Bobby Jones on the list of all-time golfers. He's the guy I feel I "Know", based on those fantastic "The Way I Play Golf" films that the golf channel has shown. I marvel at the way he played, with the equipment he used.
