I dont care if I ever see another Storm Cat bred horse as long as I live , and whats worse are all the sons to him that are out there just throwing that crappy gene to more horses. Good example , Giants Causeway , every single one I have been around has been hard headed , extremely nervous , and not a good doer , they sweat and fret everyday and get so wound up that if they were human they would prolly commit suicide.

--Dunbar PS--Honu, I pulled an idiot stunt by getting fried at Hapuna on Wednesday while spending 3 hours riding an excellent shore break. Thinking of changing my handle to Aloe Man.

My guess is someone is just going to have to take a close look at the handle. If the tracks are making money because people are betting the poly, but the so called more estute cappers drop out, so be it. The betting public ultimately pays the purses. The betting public is one of the two entities that make this whole thing work.
Owners, breeders, trainers will also have to adjust accordingly also. If we have a bunch of large fields with lots of money coming in, get ready to learn how to cap it, and cap well. If they have made the sport into a crap shoot with the surface, then welcome to Las Vegas coming to your track with the sythetic surface. This will be a very interesting wait and see. Especially with all the TC races on dirt. How exactly to prep. And as more of the major dirt handicap races go synth. and turn out to be successful from a handle perspective... very interesting future. We will see who can stomach change. |

What are some of your favorite stallions that produce offspring that you work with? Also, it appears the Mandella barn is coming on strong with many competitive two year olds. Any that have caught your eye yet to make their first start? Lastly, what are your current favorite horses to work with?
Thanks and i enjoy your comments and perspective that you bring.... PSH

Most of the Grand Slams I have been around I like , they are usually hearty horses with the ability to go short and long on the grass or the dirt. Its hard for me to pick a favorite sire line because we get so many well bred horses thru the barn , but as you can see I can tell you the one's I dont like lol. We do have a Mineshaft baby that I like , he has in incredible way of moving but is just a little bit immature right now but down the road I think he is going to be something . I hate to tout horses because sometimes they dont live up to my expectations so Ill just leave it at that , we do still have some 2 yr olds for Wayne Hughes that I havent seen yet and some more for Diamond A to come in so hopefully we can keep the winning trend going with our babies.

They bred Storm Cat to the spectacularly talented Mariah's Storm, who ran a (jointly held record for a mare) 120 Beyer Speed figure, a few years after suffering a horrifc broken leg in a KEE 2yo stake race. The first result of that seemingly all-time mating of fragility produced a world class talent nicknamed "The Iron horse." If a Storm Cat offspring is really any good, he or she is probably not going to be around racing as a 5-year-old because of economic reasons. I'm not going to try and pretend that Storm Cat has done anything positive for the overall soundness and toughness of the breed---but, I can't possibly say that he is the reason horses aren't as sound and tough as they once were. It's my gut feeling that the overuse of medications (illegal and more often legal) have had the biggest impact on why horses aren't nearly as sound as they should be. |
