Ha! Been called that a few times, too! Here's a pretty good Yiddish/English online dictionary:

http://www.yiddishdictionaryonline.com/

The entries for meshuganah, etc:
crazy meshuge meh∙shoo'∙geh / meh∙shig'∙eh (adj.) - משוגע
drive (someone) crazy meshuge makhn . (v.) משוגע געמאַכט משוגע מאַכן
crazy meshugedik meh∙shoo'∙geh·dik / meh∙shi'∙geh·dik (adj.) - משוגעדיק
madmen, insane people meshugoim . (m.) - משוגעים
insane asylum meshugoim-azil . (m.) ן- משוגעים־אַזיל
straightjacket meshugoim-hemdl . (n.) עך- משוגעים־העמדל
madman, crazy person, lunatic meshugener meh∙shoog'∙en∙er / meh∙shig'∙en∙er (m.) - משוגעןער
craziness, madness meshugas meh∙shoo∙gaas' / meh∙shi∙gaas' (n.) ן- משוגעת

And shmegege:

idler, dawdler; bufoon, idiot, fool shmegege shmeh∙geh'∙geh (m.) ס- שמעגעגע
zz shimen . (.) - שמעון
fool; inept person, nincompoop shmendrik shmen'∙drik (m.) - שמענדריק

Doesn't quite capture "shmegege".

Since I'm not Jewish, I feel no problem in feeling completely ignorant reading this thread.

Guess thats what happens when you grow up a WASP.

GPK, I'm Catholic but grew up downstate in a heavily Jewish area. My best friends in grade school, middle school and high school were all Jewish. You gotta love the dark and sarcastic sense of Jewish humor. I always have.

GPK,
I grew up in a similar place as Mike. Teaneck, NJ. Lot's of Jewish kids as friends.

Now, a little story...
I was getting married to my first wife, needed a diamond for her engagement ring. So I called up one of my high school friends, who's dad worked in the diamond center.
Hey, can you get me a nice diamond?
He said, come on over. I'm there in minutes.
Now, he's twenty-two years old, wearing jeans, just like me.
So I say, "Do you have a diamond for me?"
He reaches into his pocket and takes out a little packet...spills them on the table and says, "Pick one out." It looked like a huge pile of rock candy.
So, we start sorting.
I say, "How much are these worth?"
He says, " One and a half million, or so."
I say, "How come you carry these around? Are you at all scared?"
He says, " My family never knew when there would be a knock on the door in the night. We had to be ready to take everything we had in a moment."

End of story, he gave me a great deal on a perfect stone...and a huge amount of respect for what his people have been through.
btw...that sense of humor has kept their sanity through the difficult times, and in the "good times"...no better people to be around...even for this goiam.

Default Crazy in Cal

I am Jewish living in the SF Bay Area and feel very much alone out here.
Like i say, you can be Catholic or Protestant and live in NY City and be more Jewish than i am living out here in Northern California.

Just bought my wife a diamond in the NY City Diamond district myself from a good Jewish family store....

PSH,
All I was trying to say is that I've always felt welcomed into the homes of my Jewish friends, as you also will be if you ever come East.
The food, discussion, and "love of life" is so endearing.
Saratoga is coming up.
You have friends, so don't feel alone.

From one of the goys...

Default Thanks DTS

Thanks DTS.

I was half joking. With a lovely wife and two great small kids i am never alone.

Will be up in Saratoga on Thursday July 3 - Saturday July 5 for 3 great days of racing. Stopping by at the Finger Lakes thursday morning to see my 2YO filly Taconic Zip by City Zip who is close to her first timed workout and is on schedule for her first start in August. Quite exciting.

I will be in Saratoga to look for a trainer to take over for my horses if they can graduate to the Big Leagues (Saratoga-Belmont-Aqueduct) from The Finger Lakes.

Hope to meet other Derby Trailers when in Saratoga with all mornings at the Oklahoma Track.

Paul

Kev,

How exactly do we differentiate those feelings whether you're reading this thread or any other?

(kidding.. I kid, I kid..)
