CP West is another obstacle to Hard Spun getting lonesome up front.

Not sure that Hard Spun requires a lonesome on the lead type of trip. In the Lanes End he was comfortable sitting just off the pacesetters and didn't take the lead until turning for home.

That was true, and I agree he can rate.
However, to be fair, the Lane's End was on polytrack and he wasn't facing much. I expect King of the Roxy to mix it up early too, as i don't think he has any chance of getting 1-3/16 from coming off the pace against this group.

No way. . . They've been pointing this horse to the Preakness for a long time now. . . CQ is a new addition. . .

but of course if king of the roxy doesn't hold on due to a fast pace early, then no doubt pletcher is thinking quay can pick up the pieces late.

I agree.
King of the Roxy is a nice horse, but if he couldn't hang on going 1-1/8 against the mules that ran in the Santa Anita derby, he has no shot winning at 1-3/16 against much, much better.

The Lanes End has been confirmed in my view by the derby result, as being a solid prep. whether Hard Spun faced much that day or not, and whether it was poly or not, he showed he is not a 'must have the lead at all costs' type of runner.
