Finger Lakes to me, is either Central or Western, NY.

Albany/Adirondacks north (you could get away with Utica), Upstate.
Syracuse, Central.
Roch/Buffalo, Western.
Binghampton/Elmira/Catskills, Southern.

This is an debate that can go on and on.

I just started saying I am from VT, since I am closer to VT then any place that gets thrown at you when you say you are from NY or Upstate, NY.

"Oh Saratoga/Lake George, that's near Niagara Falls right? Oh it is not? Oh so near the City are you?."

thats funny...cause I am in VT, and I find it easier to just say I am almost in Canada....they understand it more.

My opinion is NY has many regions...but that's not the answer in the upstate vs. downstate debate

Downstate=South of Poughkeepsie East of Middletown

Upstate=All the Rest

I find it amusing on vacation when people ask where you're from and I say NY...they immediately assume the city, LI, West., Orange, Putnam CTY's.
and show it with negative attitude...once it's made known it's upstate(Capital Region or beyond) the conversation turns much more positive.
