Past winners 2004 - S. Elliott (won Derby with Smarty Jones) 2003 - J. Santos (won Derby with Funny Cide) 2002 - V. Espinoza (won Derby with War Emblem) ----ESPY's changed from January to July ------ 2001 - K. Desormeaux (won previous years Derby with Fu Peg) 2000 - C. Antley (won previos years Derby with Charismatic) 1999 - K. Desormeaux (won previous years Derby with Real Quiet) 1998 - G. Stevens (won previous years Derby with Silver Charm) 1997 - J. Bailey (won previous years Derby with Grindstone) 1996 - J. Bailey (2nd in previous years Derby; regular ride of Cigar) 1995 - C. McCarron (won previous years Derby with Go for Gin) 1994 - M. Smith (2nd in previous years Derby; regular rider of Holy Bull) So, with 11 ESPY's given out for best jockey, 9 went to the rider of the Derby within the voting range. The gap between 2001-2002 accounts for the ESPY's moving from a January awards show (hence the previous year's Derby winning jockey getting the majority of votes) to a July show (hence the current year's Derby winning jockey getting the majority of votes). Guess you could say that Jorge Chavez (Monarchos) was screwed by the change!
