It might be a little unfair to blame the trainer on this one.

Wouldn't the Ashland, a $500K Grade 1 on polytrack, have been the right spot? One has to wonder why she missed that race and therefore how she could be ready for the Oaks.

It looks more and more likely she will never win again. Not all that surprising.

maybe. however, i liked the old fashioned trainers that used to put their foot down when an owner was about to try something stupid. ultimately, in my eyes, the trainer should be responsible for stupid moves like this. is he that afraid that owner will change trainers?

i also think a race over poly would have been a better spot, since she's training so marvelously on it. then again, she has speed, so maybe dirt is the better option. if they really had half a clue, they'd try running her on turf.

who knows, she might even like it!

You know if they act now, they can still get her to Storm Cat.

If she were to suddenly swing for the Derby, I'd feel so terrible for Teuflesberg. It's like just when they think he's back in, someone puts the screws to his chances. Not that he's my super duper fave but c'mon they keep getting jerked around.

The Summer Stakes she won at Woodbine last year was on grass...as was the Tippet Stakes she won at Colonial.

Very possible. He's done it before and will likely do it again. Calabrese has a massive ego.

Owners often change trainers for much more trivial matters than being told that they are stupid. There are very few trainers that have the luxury of being able to tell the owner not to do someting stupid and keep their horses.

Private trainer, big owner, and they've been married and divorced and married again -- more than once, LOL. I often question who is calling what shot in many cases -- jock, spot, etc.

From what I hear, Catalano is going public, maybe full blown, and Calabrese is moving some of the soldiers around, or just riding out what he has and restocking with a few others. Maybe true, maybe not. Not really sure.

Also, I don't know if he's still on the team -- he's been off and on before as well -- but Steve Leving is/was also involved. I don't know any of them personally. I did meet Wayne once.

However, regardless of who calls the shots, this guy is a high % trainer. He's produced for other owners before. They play the game the right way, place their horses aggressively, etc. In the past, Catalano was training for Turf Express, and a few other owners also.
