I've been playing the Derby for 14 yrs. I have been completely shut out with my top pick winning the Derby. The closest my top pick got winning the Derby was when Afleet Alex ran 3rd. I also agree this race is impossible to handicap.

I've only been actively betting the Derby for about four years now -- and the only one I got right was Smarty Jones.

Funny Cide in 2003 was my best "top pick".
The 3 years since then have been pretty bad. How bad you ask? Well let's just say that in '04.....I liked Friends Lake.

I have had some decent success.

Smarty Jones
Fu Peg
Thunder Gulch
Unbridled
Strike The Gold

So 5 out of 20 isnt too bad I guess.

Monarchos/ Invisible Ink

keyed Inky in all my bets. Friend asked me who I liked then put $50 to win on him. I said "to hit the board" not to win silly

Funny Cide was almost as easy as Silver Charm
I liked Free House (rip big guy) I didn't bet him to show and he paid $10 to show. grrr.

oh and had a little something on Charismatic.

other than that I stink big time.

Off the top of my head, and not in order:

Sunny's Halo
Winning Colors
Sunday Silence
Go for Gin
Thunder Gulch
Smarty Jones.

And all but the last were due to my excellent "I liked the name best" method. Sigh...

I did for a while have a remarkable skill at picking the winner of the Belmont for the Derby and giving up on the horse just in time for the Belmont. (Editor's Note, Touch Gold, Victory Gallop). The Editor's Note one still hurts. I remember I spent that Belmont in an OTB right next to a theater where I was performing in "Of Mice and Men." Boy, Curly's Wife was cranky in the evening show that day...

I have had a few.
Silver Charm
Barbaro
Fu Peg
Lil E. Tee (no capping, my name is Elise Teer).lol

My best longshot was Closing Arguement. I loved him, all the "real" cappers were telling me I was crazy, but I put $20 across on him and made my money back..... Freaking Giamaco.lol
