Tom Fool was reluctant to cover mares initially, probably for the same reason as postulated earlier - he was told NO GIRLS for so long that he had to unlearn the lesson. His Felinity, Cougar II, had control issues; he wasn't going to cover a mare with all those PEOPLE around, putting their hands on his, ahem, member to guide it. Once the people got wise and let him do it HIS way, he covered them fine.

There is an amusing story in Federico Tesio's memoirs about a stallion of his who was sold to the Italian remount and wouldn't cover his mares. Tesio's solution displayed some cute equine psychology. (Tesio bred Nearco and Ribot, among others).
