![]() Grade/Group 1 wins against older horses:
Manila - 5 Silver Charm - 1 Silver Charm was a very horse against his own generation, but when pitted against the best older horses, not so great. All Manila did was win the United Nations, Turf Classic, and BC Turf as a 3 year old, then follow it up with another UN win along with the Arlington Million the next year. |

Like it or not, dirt counts a lot more than turf in this country, and wins in the Classics for 3yos count a lot more than wins in races like the United Nations. |

![]() Silver Charm did also win the Dubai World Cup as a four year old beating older horses. He is the only Kentucky Derby winner to do so. The race was new so it wasn't a group one race at that time, but was as tough as any race run that year.

I'm not trying to disparage Silver Charm, as he was the first near of the string of near misses I witnessed at Belmont. He's a very good horse. I just happen to think that Manila's resume is a bit more impressive. But I can certainly understand why those who think Silver Charm deserves the nod, and he probably will get in before a horse like Manila. |
