![]() The ride on Jose in Laurel's 1st race today---makes that Daytime Promise ride in the loss to Game Card, look like the smartest ride of the year.
Laurel's 1st race was a five furlong starter allowance race with a $19K purse. The 1/9 favorite, who had run a 106 Beyer last time out, was facing three badly overmatched rivals in a scratch-fest. The 1/9 favorite, who had superior early speed, broke to a clear lead and was inexplicably taken under a firm hold in attempt to be rated on the lead! Meanwhile, in a rare stroke of brilliance, Oliver Castillo guns a horse up to challenge the 1/9 favorite. He's outside of him and riding the ears off his mount, while the rider of Jose is rating him on the lead. Off the far-turn, Jose wants to drift out---this Kobiskie nitwit is doing everything humany possible to keep him straight...he can't....he carries out the eventual 2nd place finisher--WHOM he let in the race in the first place---enough so to rightfully warrent a DQ. He proceeds to run off in the late stages and is first under the wire. It was an absolute comedy to watch! If this rider is ever again on a 1/9 favorite with superior early speed, in a 4 horse field, going five furlongs---I highly doubt he will try 'rating while on the lead' tactics again. Sometimes they never learn though. |
