![]() long-winded Discreet Cat is the greatest thing since sliced bread post......
<WARNING : You may need to take a painkiller or two before reading this.> There is an insane theory going around that Discreet Cat might have trouble going a route of ground....and that he "is a miler." I assume this theory isn't based on the fact that he got his last 1/4 mile in a supersonic 23 and change when he won his debut. I also assume it's not based on the fact that he routed a trio of South American superstars at 9 furlongs, in only career start #3, while making his stakes debut. I also assume it's not based on the fact that he has rated kindly (even when wrestled back behind slow paces) in every career start. In fact, typically, horses that rate kindly, and can be taken back behind less-than-fast early paces, they seem to have the most sucess stretching out. So, what is all this nonsense about DC's "possible distance limitations" based based upon? I can only assume it's pedigree related....and the logic behind it is that he's by Forestry (a precieved sprinter/miler) out of a mare "who blew a stretch lead going 5 furlongs in her debut." People forget that Forestry raced 4 times in route races in his career. He won three of them, and was 3rd beaten 1 length to Menifee (that year's Derby 2nd place finisher) and Cat Thief (that year's BC Classic winner) in his only loss. Pretty Discreet (DC's dam) was an 8 length, big figure, Grade 1 winner going 10 furlongs. Discreet Cat's 2nd dam is a full sister to a KY Oaks winner. DC's 3rd dam is very closely related to half siblings Touch Gold (Belmont Stakes winner) and With Approval (Canadian Triple Crown winner) Not bad! DC's dam did blow a lead sprinting in her career debut---however, Point Given's dam (Turko's Turn) blew a clear lead going just 4.5 furlongs at Golden Gate in her career debut. ![]() Did that trivial piece of information stop anyone from thinking the 12 furlong Belmont Stakes (Which PG won by a city block) would be "too far" for him? I know a rational arguement can be made that Pretty Discreet simply loved the Saratoga slop....and her incredible performance in the '95 Alabama Stakes was an absolute fluke. ![]() Obviously, the sloppy track and speed favoring nature of it had a lot to do with her gigantic 22 point new career top figure---however, the fact that she was able to rate comfortably, on an uncontested early lead, for the first time in her life, also played a pretty key role in the big jump-up. Point Given's dam, as you can see above, also jumped up to an 11 point new career top, when she was stretched out, and allowed to get comfotable, while loose on an uncontested early lead, for the first time in her life. I will end this painfully long winded post, by suggesting that when the day comes, and Discreet Cat is allowed to get loose on an uncontested early lead, through comfortable early fractions, over a speed biased track, and going long....Ghostzapper's (another supposed sprinter) 128 Beyer will possibly be eclipsed. |

![]() Amazing field of horses that showed up for that 95 Alabama...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBRG8_UPvdA What did Pretty Discreet do after winning that race? |

![]() You cannot honestly believe that people think Discreet Cat is a miler because his dam was run down going 5f in her debut. I doubt many know, or even care. It is as irrelevant as her win in the Alabama at 10f.
I also don't think a lot of people are lining up to bet against Discreet Cat when he runs longer. He'll be 1 to 5. He won't run 128, and probably will never run a 120 either. |

It was specifically designed to annoy four people---three of which have checked in. Someone please page BTW...... |

![]() You make a good arguement, however I'll believe it when I see a domestic 2 turn route at a classic distance, the very thing they have taken great pains to avoid this year. The nine furlong race in Dubai looked great, but i'm not convinced that the horse is really that much better than Invasor. I remain doubtful that Discreet Cat is capable of a 10 furlong 128 beyer like you described.
FYI, I did not find you post annoying. |

You'll just have to try and resist the temptation of reading next week's eye-sore.... Right now, I believe Pinnacle has the over/under at 2.5 for how many times I include the name Simpatico Bribon in our next installment. The line on the number of scanned images is 1.5 |

but really, after his fast work at the sale, he's shown what he can do. they really should retire him rather than risk racing, so he can breed more just like him! such speed, such amazing talent!! |

I'm not sure how to respond to this. Either you are asking me how I can call offspring of Foresty CHEAP speed types, or you are making some sort of joke about offspring of Foresty making young bird squawking noises (CHEEP). If the former, it's pretty easy. Other than druggies favorite horse since mineshaft, who exactly has Forestry sired of quality? They are mostly cheap speed types that are faint of heart. He reminds me alot of Wild Again. They both consistently produced overpriced yearlings (and 2yos!) that might win impressively first or second time out and then never do much again. |

However, none of them might have got the obsessive hype I gave Rock Hard Ten....after his debut win, I made it a point to call him "Future Hall-of-Famer Rock Hard Ten" and extoll his virtues loudly every day, even after Smarty Jones dismantled him the first time. |
