Old time baseball fans will probably recognize the name of a runner in race 6 - #2 Enos Slaughter, nicknamed "Country." A Hall of Famer who played most of his career for the Cardinals, I do remember his playing for the Yankees in the 1956 World Series; even at age 40, he out-hustled everyone else on the field. You can probably still get into an argument whether his spiking of Jackie Robinson in an incident at second base in 1947 (?) was racially motivated or just a strenuous attempt by a hard nosed baserunner to break up a double play. |
