I sometimes get caught up in the handicapping and pretty much ignore the other most important thing which of course, is the betting.

I've seen way to many good handicappers throw money away at this game because they bet like preschoolers. Understanding how to wager is the single most important, and the single most underrated aspect, of making money playing the races. 2 people that like the same exact horses never end up making/losing the same amount of money. That's what separates good players from mediocre/poor ones.
