last place horse: Summer Is Tomorrow (does DNF count as last?)

Congrats on your pick for last. You nailed it. Sometimes I think these extras don't have much value, but we probably all got a new tool for our handicapping toolbox and that is to be sure to put a bet on whichever horse Don and Joly and Plen choose to finish last.

I'm just surprised it wasn't me. I used to have a friend that had a house on the street just behind the Oaklawn backstretch. I used to go over to his house and we would walk over to Oaklawn. Anyway, he wasn't much of a handicapper so I would share my thoughts on the races. He would usually do better than me. So I asked him, "how come you do so well." He replied, " I just bet whichever horses you don't like."

You may be on to something. Just look at the horses I throw out with a disdainful "hasn't got a chance" and box them. Probably would show a positive ROI.

The scene in our family room yesterday was probably typical of many homes during the Derby stretch run. My wife and I were watching, and I was intently watching the duel of Epicenter and Zandon as they approached the wire. Both of them seemed to be struggling to get the final 1/16th. I was alive to both of them in the Oaks/Derby Double and was already calculating the will pays. I think that I shouted, "who's that on the rail" and after seeing a #21 (didn't recognize the saddlecloth color) proceeded to throw my clipboard and pen into the air and sit there dumbfounded. Leon gave his horse an incredible ride through traffic, passing numerous very tired horses.

Indeed. When you watch the overhead he got a great trip in a 20 horse field. My horses generally get boxed in with a 6 horse field.

Like everybody else, I had no clue about that horse, but I didn't think he would finish last. He looked like a closer and I thought he would likely finish midpack at best. Have to say I wasn't entirely enamored with Zandon and Epicenter either, but they were the real deal. I figured the winner would be one of the California horses. More often than not, the winner has to have at least a 100 beyer figure and those two and Epicenter, I think, were the only ones that did. I guess, a Mine That Bird type horse has to come along every 15 or 20 years. Will be interesting to see how he fares should they choose to go on with the Triple Crown. Mine that Bird showed in the Preakness that he was no fluke. That is the only race I can claim that I had the cold tri, but unfortunately for only a buck. Ifi I had only known.

So funny. I think I told you the other day that I put $300 in my Xpressbet account before last year's derby and I played on it all year. At one point, I lost down to about $100 then won it all back. At one point yesterday it was up to about $480 then the last two races came along and I lost what I was ahead. Glanced at my total at the end of the day and it was $300.04 cents. Wondering when the IRS is gonna call for their penny. I guess, if I was a serious gambler I might not play the Derby at all.
Anything can happen in a 20 horse field. I think we all think of it as "so what, if I lose?" It only comes along once a year. How can we regale everyone with tales of Derby glory, if we don't play. Such thoughts are dangerous to a person's internet account.
