![]() ![]() As to a $2.10 winner, there really was one of them yesterday at Zia Park. Irad Ortiz flew in to ride a Steve Asmussen "sure thing". On paper, Super Stock looked about 8 lengths faster than the rest, and while he made his backers worry a bit, did win and I think created a negative win pool. How the local horsemen felt about some carpetbaggers coming into town to grab the lion's share of their largest purse off the year was not reported. |

![]() ^^^ Sometimes those "sure things" get beat. Did you see Baby Yoda's race? He looked like a world beater in one of his races a couple of races back, but doesn't seem to be the same after that race. I think that sometimes those huge efforts turn out to be a Pyrrhic victory. Seems to happen to a lot of horses. They put out a huge effort and can never quite match that effort again, but who knows? Might have injured himself, after that big effort and it might be fixable. Wouldn't be surprised to hear that diagnostic work had been done on him.
Congrats on the win JolyB. Looks like you have some interesting venues to choose from. Last edited by cal828 : 11-24-2021 at 11:09 AM. |

![]() You're absolutely right about that Cal. Since we will probably be at Aqueduct next weekend for the Cigar Mile/Remsen/Demoisellle card, I'd like to head elsewhere this Saturday. It's closing weekend at Churchill and at this point I'm leaning toward their Stars of Tomorrow card with a couple of important graded stakes as well as the Lively Shivley Stakes. I'm just dying to find out more about that name. I'll post the venue announcement later this evening

![]() Too bad they didn't include the Clark in their Saturday races. Midnight Bourbon, Dr Post, and Maxfield should make for an interesting race.

![]() Shively Name Meaning, Family History, Family Crest & Coats ...
https://www.houseofnames.com/shively-family-crest Shively History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms. Shively is an ancient Norman name that arrived in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066 . The Shively family lived in Derbyshire, at Shipley, from where they derived their name. Alternatively, the name could have originated "from Shipley (pasture for sheep), the name of several places in England. |

![]() Thank you for the information Ruffian. I tried to do some additional research to figure out why a racetrack in Louisville would name a race after it. Turns out the reason is local. Shively is a town that is part of metropolitan Louisville, located about a mile of two from CD. It has had strong ties to the bourbon industry, and is still the site of the Brown Forman distillery [they make Early Times and Old Forester]. It has had a colorful past. The following from the town's history explains the nickname:
"Eight whiskey distilleries opened nearby after the end of Prohibition. When Louisville began an attempt to annex and tax them during the Great Depression, they talked the residents of Shively into incorporating separately (finalized May 23, 1938) and annexing their district instead. Their $20-million revenue stream left the small city well funded, despite its becoming the state’s fastest-growing city during the 1950s as white flight and suburbanization reached Louisville. Increased taxes and changing tastes closed most of Shively’s distilleries in the late 1960s. Shively’s population has gradually declined since reaching 19,223 in 1970. Budget surpluses became shortfalls, and Shively tried but failed to annex more suburban territory in Pleasure Ridge Park in 1984. The same year, the town was hit with a scandal when police chief Michael Donio admitted to taking bribes to allow prostitution in the area. Such events led to the community’s reputation as “Lively Shively” (as the name of the town is pronounced with a “long i”, this is a rhyme)." And that's today's trivia.
