There was a guy at the Alamo named Travers.

Oh, OK. That must mean that Retama has named its major race after him. Also Bowie and Crockett, but probably not Santa Anna.

RQ, I think you may be thinking about William B. Travis. He was the commander of the ill fated Texans, Tennesee volunteers, etc. Not that I know anything about Texas history, but I did see the movie with John Wayne.

Very true Cal. I always fact check my nonsensical posts beforehand. I knew the Saratoga race was in fact named for the country singer Randy Travis.

Making nonsensical posts is a true talent which is to be admired. I lean toward the trivial myself. I excel at the regurgitation of little known facts that nobody knows and few people care about. I was thinking the race might have been named after Mary Travers. I think she was the blonde haired lady in the singing group Peter, Paul and Mary or maybe it was Nancy Travers. I think she plays Tim Allen's wife in that comedy show on Fox.

OK. Now I have to check if there is a Colt named Puff the Magic Dragon running on Travers Day (but the way my horse picking has gone lately a horse named Home Improvement will pay boxcar numbers and I won't have it)

I know what you mean. To quote an old P,P and M song by the master of lyric poetry, Bob Dylan, my handicapping has been on "the dark side of the road."

Following the trend of this thread [if it has one] "The answer, my friends, is blowing in the wind......"

If I can't handicap horses worth a hoot, at least I can try to supply some comic relief. Now getting ready to batten down the hatches for what is going to be a windy and wet night. With all of the rain in the forecast and the storm heading up the Hudson valley, the Spa will probably be off the turf tomorrow.
