I think you are wrong, but would have to look it up. I believe he was 32-1
in the Derby and still fairly long odds in the Preakness like 10-1 maybe, but maybe you are talking about another race.

Sorry, I was wrong, it was only 31-1 on Charismatic.

CAL (“Sorry, I was wrong, it was only 31-1 on Charismatic.)

***CHECK ML FOR HIM***
That is what I may be remembering
because that’s a pretty odd number/=> 17/1 <=
For me to remember that long ago

Yes that might be what you are remembering. Poor old Charismatic didn't get much respect from anybody. As I recall, Lukas was sitting with the owners of Cat Thief when Charismatic won. It's strange to look back on that race. I may not be remembering right, but seems like Charismatic had a Beyer speed figure of 108 before the Derby and he was a longshot. If he had a figure like that in today's race, he'd be 1 to 10.

Only Wayne Lukas would have a horse ready to win in the Derby after only a two week turnaround from his victory (at only 1 1/16 miles) in the Lexington.

Yes, he did that Lexington/Derby thing well. Also, ran 2nd with Proud Citizen in War Emblem's Derby after winning the Lexington. I don't recall the Lexington having much relevance lately. To be fair about him sitting with Cat Thief's owner, if that really happened or is just an apocryphal memory on my part, in those days, he was like Bob Baffert or Chad Brown of today. He had an embarrassment of riches in horses and probably had to spread himself a bit thin among the owners of multiple entries.

That's a pretty unlikely ML odds. When Mike Battaglia did the ML for the Derby, he usually moved in increments of 5 once he got above 10-1 ( i.e. 15-1, 20-1, 25-1, but probably not 17-1).

I do recall that Charismatic went off as a very generous overlay. Recall even more how heroic Chris Antley was in helping his injured horse in the Belmont.
