I hate to point out the obvious,
but the best comeback of 2006 was Go Deputy.

this is a 6YO who I dont remember doing anything in 2005.
yet he won a Grade 1 this year and ran 2nd in 3 others.

had a really impressive campaign and was just a notch below the best turf runners in this country(EC and Cacique) throughout the course of the year.

What did Thor's Echo "comeback" from? Mediocrity?

I see the point you are making though...

The horse hadn't won in over 16 months coming into the Breeders Cup, he was defeated soundly in 3 ungraded stakes this year, of his three lifetime wins coming into the BC---two came against Cal Bred company, the other was at Sunland Park....and with a pair of November Grade 1 wins...he's a lead-pipe cinch for champion sprinter honors.

What's funny, is that he only ran in the Ancient Title because an allowance race didn't fill. Had that allowance race filled, no matter how impressive the victory...it is VERY unlikely he would have even started in the BC Sprint.

Shows you how great our sprinters were this year....that Thor's Echo is a DESERVING eclipse award winner in that division.

my favorite "comeback" within a race was circular quay's hopeful in which he was way behind, ran into traffic, and still won easily going away against some fairly talented 2 year olds.

my favorite comeback horse of the year though was giacomo. his return from the injury he sustained in the '05 Belmont was more impressive than i thought it would be.
the horse turned in more than respectable perfomances in the strub and the goodwood, and ran very nice races in the san diego and the bcc.
he may not have been great, but beating lava man, perfect drift, brother derek, lawyer ron, george washington, suave, and sun king in the biggest race of the year isn't too bad either.
