This goes back in time, but to say that no scotus member ever spoke of candidates is patently false.
When it came down to jefferson vs burr, john marshall (jeffersons cousin and chief justice at the time) told hamilton and who knows who else that he wanted burr over jefferson. He didnt even know burr, but he detested his cousin. Of course after many house votes, much wrangling, and hamilton favoring jefferson over his eventual killer and working to get votes for jefferson, tj won and burr became vp. Marshall had to administer the oath of office, so he did so with his back turned to jefferson. I have no doubt there are other examples of justices involvement in politics and making their wishes known, but this story i have known and remembered for years.
