There is much more to the story than what was published. The reason for the contract in the first place was because Randy "bought" Jara's book from Jara's then current agent. Jara wanted Randy and went along with the deal. Since Randy was paying for the book, the only protection he had was a contract. There is more to that as well. Also, as far as Randy being home in KY for a long time -- that's a relative term and in this case, very inaccurate. Since Randy has had Jara's book, he has spent the majority of his time away from home.

Yes, he was in Saratoga all summer and he has a place in NY. He's been going to the hospital in NY straight through since he's been here. He was also here all Spring. Sure, he took the occasional trips home and all. In addition, when Randy was in NY he had Gatewood working with him. It's not like Gatewood was working when Randy wasn't here and Randy could then be at home more often. Randy had Gatewood working with him all the time. The original plan was for Randy to work with Gatewood and ultimately retire and hand Jara's book over to Gatewood. That was the succession plan so to speak.

The big turning point for him seemed to be his huge upset in the Gotham on Like Now at like 35/1 odds.

Basically, the race was over-flowing with speed on paper...and all the other jocks seemed to keep their mounts quiet during the warm-up..and tried to rate them to avoid participated in what would seem like a destructive pace battle through fast fractions.

Jara, wisely decided to let his free-running cheap speed horse go, and he ended up setting very comfortable fractions, while fairly uncontested, and pulling it off late. Pretty much no one passed in that race. It was like a Merry-go-round.

Prior to that race, Jara had comically abysmal stats at the meet, as I remember....after that win, it seemed like good fortune could not avoid him.
