Not true for this year.
What's more vacuous than dismissing 2008 as a dreadful crop. Just because Big Brown beat every competitor he raced (throwing out the Belmont due to injury) doesn't make it a dreadful crop. His talent proved to be a man among boys. When you can win by 4 1/2 lengths from 5 wide at post 20, that speaks volumes. Only done once before in the early 20th century by the way.

I agree with you that this year's contenders look to be a strong group.

Dortmund's results this year, coupled with his pedigree and athleticism has me living in the past. To be precise, 2008

Big Brown was a nice horse, but that was an empirically bad crop.

Agreed.

I think, from what I've read on boards and racing sites, that people are confusing A.P. with Bayern.

A.P. doesn't need the lead, you can tell by watching him run.

We are still nearly 2 months away from the Derby, right now I just want the mystery of the short tail and name misspelling solved!

I love your absolutes about things far from proven. The only time he didn't control the pace, he got drowned.

From Jennie Rees Courier Journal article:
Tale of the tail: The only flaw with American Pharoah might be that he has an inordinately short tail. But that's because on the McKathan Brothers Farm near Ocala, a fellow 2-year-old chewed off much of his tail. The culprit is believed to have been Mr. Z, another Zayat horse on the Derby trail, along with El Kabeir.
