I think Groovy may have had a few trainers before Jose Martin. It's pretty amazing he ran in the Derby.

I know its hard to believe, but Magoo was his first trainer.
Noone ever gets that one right.

It's not hard to believe. He had horses back then and was more than a little shrewd with a young horse.

There are a lot of good trainers from 20 years ago that disappeared.

He actually had a horse entered at Belmont ( I think it ran once or twice ) that had been racing in Phili.

I think he's not too popular with a lot of people ( at least in NY ) anymore.

He finished last of 16, beaten almost 50 lengths. I had a postcard of that Derby rounding the first turn when he was in the lead, unfortunately it was another casualty of the flood at work. He also won a sprint stake at Finger Lakes and set a track record at the time. Who was in the irons that day?

Purple Mountain was second (he wasn't that bad either) and another oldie but goodie - VINNIE THE VIPER was third. The Budweiser Breeder's Cup Sprint was the only major stake race they ran there. A few year's later they gave it up to spread the money out for other races
The jock aboard GROOVY that day still rides at the Lakes...JUILO PEZUA

Yeah, I got Purple Mountain and Pumpkin Moonshine mixed up. Vinnie the Viper may have been Klesaris...at least I think he was at one time.

That sprint on Fourth of July weekend used to be a big event at Finger Lakes.

Here's one about Groovy.....he finished second in the second division of a split Gotham ( I think it was split ) in 1986 only to be disqualified. Who was the easy winner and what fradulent big race winner was placed second?

Man, I remember that race, the winner himself was fraudulent!!! It was Mogambo always touted highly and trained by Jolley and owned by Brant I think.
Geez, the 2nd place horse was fraudulent as well?
Geez. I mean the Derby was won by Ferdinand that year and the Preak by SNow Chief, the Belmont by Danzig Connection. But I dont think Danzig Connection was in the Gotham because he got a VERY late start that year and barely made the belmont. Travers was won by Wise Times, but i don't think he was in the Gotham either. Hmm. The BC the previous year was won by Tasso, I know he lost in the Wood, it was the first Wood I ever went to. but I don't recall him in the Gotham.
WHo was it?

I can't believe they ran him back in the Preakness off that effort, that's something Mr.Lukas would do
