The stewards who let him back on the track after the second time should be fired if they aren't retired already.

This type of nonsense is what's driving bettors away from the game.

Dealing with jockeys who can't read English, much less a racing form, who can't judge pace, who herd on the far turn with impunity...

What percentage of jocks do you think have used a buzzer at some point in their career? My GUESS is would be <70%.

Is it just me or are both of these statements pretty damning? First, a 70% threshhold is set as some type of reasonable level; second, we have the thought that three out of four might have cheated.

My hope is that you could count the number of instances over the last two decades on your one hand.

The stewards ruled that Chapa violated four rules or racing: possession of contraband, influence of race prohibited, unlawful influence on racing, and inhumane treatment of horse or Greyhound.


The latest suspension is the third for Chapa for attempting to alter the outcome of a horse's performance during a race. During his first year as a jockey, Chapa was suspended for nine months in Texas for possession of contraband intended to increase or decrease the speed of his horse after he told investigators he used a nail on his horse. In 2007 he was suspended five years in New Mexico for possession of an electrical device and was reinstated on a probationary basis in May 2011 prior to completion of the suspension.

I think the truth of the matter is that the use of buzzers is so common that it's not even considered a big deal. The authorities have to act like it's a big deal but I don't think they truly think it's a big deal. How widespread is the use of buzzers? Since the year 2000, there have been 53 guys caught. I bet guys are caught less than 1% of the time, so there are probably thousands of instances of guys doing it. I had no idea that the use was still so widespread until seeing that statistic that there have been 53 cases since the year 2000.
