Ever heard of Alibhai? Unraced? Top sire, chef-de-race? Didn't have the numbers that sires do these days, but if you looked at percentages, he'd be in the running for this title.

Arthur Hancock of Stone Farm got caught in the burst of the bloodstock bubble in 1986/7, when the tax-laws changed. He had to sell Sunday Silence to save the farm, quite literally. He could not interest anybody in Kentucky in buying or syndicating Sunday Silence; lord knowns he tried. Only the Japanese wanted him.
