Ive always thought if you really know what you are doing there is no need to pay premium for any horse. If you are confident in what you are doing, how you are buying, and who you are dealing with, why would you want to pay top dollar?

$5mm doesn't seem too unreasonable. Horse probably stands for 10k if they retire him today, that's about a $3mm value right now (100 mares a year X 3 years) Hey, I give them credit for building a partnership up to the level where they can get a Derby starter or a BC winner.

I have a hard time believing that horse could get paid $10K for 100 covers.

And, I'm not quite sure the horse business will be unaffected by a recession.

Hed stand for 5k if he retired right now and stayed in Kentucky. Hes like a Mr Sekiguchi at this point.

The only saver is Winstar can support him.

He would also get very few decent mares. The oversaturated stallion market wouldnt accept an unproven horse like this for 10k. Not in kentucky

100 is doubtful, but that's what they calculate off of.

FYI, my $10k estimation is based off of The Cliff's Edge who stands for that amount, who has a similar pedigree and only somewhat more accomplished (despite being certainly faster).

Only somewhat? He won the Blue Grass, was second in the Travers, and third in the JCGC ( which, for whatever it's worth, he would have won if he didn't break his leg ).

I think he was more than somewhat more accomplished.

Cliff's Edge covered 55 mares in 2007, his third year at stud. That likely means less than 40 live foals. To count on 100 a year for 3 years with a questionable stallion prospect doesn't seem very realistic.

I don't have the link in front of me, but Steve Haskin lists Court Vision as his #1 Derby prospect at this point on the Derby Trail. I'm not disagreeing or agreeing, just stating that fact.

I seriously doubt finishing third in the JCGC did anything for his stud career (although i don't disagree he was best, I bet him in that race). His second in the Travers was very good, but again, that doesn't add all that much to his stallion value (and yes... I bet him in that race too.) That leaves the Blue Grass... while a very important race, hasn't been a stallion producer either.

You gotta remember who we're dealing with in the breeding industry... bloodlines mean just as much as race accomplishments.

However, he was also MUCH more horse than CV.

Based off that alone - I think it's fair to say Haskin couldn't handicap his way out of a paper bag.
