Much, much different now than "back in the day." After a 4-1/2 year hitch in the USAF, 1964-1968, I got out and joined an ANG unit out of Floyd Bennett Field in NY. We got activated and "deployed" in March, 1970 for......wait for it......the postal strike!

Bad year for the NG, hope nobody was hurt at your site...May 4, 1970 was the worst NG action...Worked with several people that had kids at Kent State working the phones desperately trying to find out if their kids were safe..One of them wasn't so lucky...

Have many 'older' friends who served in 'Nam and can't imagine the shiat they dealt with coming back with little to no help sans 'welcome home' compared to those coming back now to 'open' arms.

I'm sorry for those 'back in the day'.

Well, I only got cursed at once by some mongrel hippie type at O'Hare back in Sept, 1967 as I was returning from Korea in uniform to reunite with my bride in Iowa (she was staying with her parents).

Got on a practially empty UAL DC-6B, and had a very enjoyable conversation with a nice stewardess during a raging midwest thunderstorm. All the greetings I needed waiting for me at the Cedar Rapids airport that night.
